Creation is at the heart of the Lower School Art curriculum. Second graders experiment enthusiastically with drawing, painting, creating, and sculpting. They learn to coordinate their hands and minds in explorations of the visual world. Students develop basic art skills, techniques, and terminology in Art. The Art curriculum is heavily integrated with Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science. Students begin the year by studying the illustrations of Tomie dePaola, which coincides with the reading of his early chapter books and legends in Language Arts. Second graders write their own autobiographies in Language Arts and add illustrations in the style of Tomie dePaola.
