Students begin the year with an in-depth study of artist and children’s book author, Tomie dePaola. Through his four-part book series, students will learn about the author's life growing up as a young boy and will then create their own autobiographies. Second graders will also examine folklore written by Tomie dePaola and will have an opportunity to create their own legends using the author's writing style as their inspiration. Students apply their knowledge of the writing process by creating an original story of their own for the Young Authors’ Bookwriting Contest sponsored by Charlotte Parent Magazine. Second graders will learn about two different poets this year and they will write and present their poetic works. They will round out the year in reading with literature from the fantasy and historical fiction genres.
