Life Skills is an enrichment course that covers real-life topics that are age-appropriate and prepares students on how to handle themselves during challenging situations that may occur on a day-to-day basis.
Second grade students will determine what life skills are necessary to be contributing members of a community. Five character concepts will be explored throughout the year: Acceptance & Self-Respect, Compassion, Truth, Responsibility, and Respect. Students will discover their own character traits and learn to exhibit patience, acceptance, and compasssion for others. The character concepts link directly to service learning projects in the community. Second and third graders work together to exhibit compassion as they interact with residents at The Haven at Highland Creek, a home for people who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Second graders will explore homelessness in Charlotte and the surrounding area. They take initiative to make a difference in the community by hosting a supply drive for the Charlotte Rescue Mission. As students learn about respect, they discover that we must show respect to people, objects, animals, and nature.
The Life Skills units will be presented through the use of thematic literature, journaling, and self-reflective writing. Role playing, skits, and class discussion will also be a part of the Life Skills curriculum. Students will be asked to consider the following question: What Life Skills are necessary to be a contributing member of a community?
