Second graders become mathematical problem solvers who can recognize and solve problems readily. Problem solving involves applying skills, experiences, and understanding to resolve new or perplexing situations. It challenges students to apply their understanding of mathematical concepts in a new or complex situation.

Students are encouraged to think about why mathematics works in addition to how it works. They explore geometry through a study of architecture in the community. Second graders become smart shoppers as they learn the value of coins and price comparison. Opportunities abound for integration with science at they investigate symmetry in nature and chart temperatures in their community.
