The goal of Spanish at the second grade level is to provide the students with meaningful, context-rich, and enjoyable opportunities to hear and use Spanish. Students build a basic vocabulary around categories, which include vowels, alphabet, colors, numbers, verbs, opposites, family, body parts, directions, family, days, months, seasons, weather, school, food, house, animals, clothing, places, and occupations. They learn key phrases and commands. Second graders also learn how to ask and answer basic questions related to each unit. A number of cognates (similar words English/Spanish) are continually presented. It is important that students become familiar with the Spanish language and culture.
The learning process is reinforced through songs, games, visuals, role play, and repetition. Home reinforcement is welcomed and encouraged through the playing of interactive online games. Links to the games are posted on the class page.
