The fiction and nonfiction novels our students read in third grade are tightly integrated with our Social Studies curriculum and focus on different historical figures who influenced the communities in which they lived. This allows for students to make historical connections within the books they are reading. Other genres such as poetry, fantasy, realistic fiction, and drama are also sprinkled into the course of the year. Students are encouraged to explore the various genres of literature through an independent Genre Exploration. Students are asked to respond to the novels by writing reflections, discussing the books in small groups, and relating to their own personal experiences. Students apply higher ordering thinking skills in order to create projects based on each novel.
Writing is an important part of the Language Arts curriculum. Ample time is dedicated to Writer’s Workshop, where the students work through the writing process from brainstorming to publishing. Students understand that writing is a very interactive process as they conference regularly with the teacher in order to revise, edit, and publish their writing. The focus of writing in third grade is to develop strong paragraphs in their narrative and expository pieces. Children are expected to understand and use the rules for capitalization and punctuation. Students are exposed to grammar rules on a weekly basis and are expected to apply the rules in their written work. Children continually share their writing with their peers through oral presentation. Cursive handwriting is taught at this grade level and encouraged in written pieces during the third trimester.
