Instructor: Barb Sigmund-Jones
This year in third grade the students will spend the beginning of the year examining how numbers are the international language. They will explore how number systems evolved in ancient communities throughout the world and how those ancient systems compare to our system today.
Following our study on ancient number systems, students will examine the inner workings of a community by exploring its economy. We will discuss in detail our nation’s monetary system and how it compares to communities around the world. The students will also explore how local businesses determine pricing and profit by examining the cost involved in launching a business. This unit will culminate in a bake sale that will benefit the school’s annual fund.
Throughout the year students will be asked to make real world connections to the math they are learning. They will write real world math stories, explore international systems of measurement, graph the decline of natural resources, and study how basic geometry is the architecture of life.
