Life Skills is an enrichment course that covers real-life topics that are age-appropriate and prepares students on how to handle themselves during challenging situations that may occur on a day-to-day basis.
Fourth grade students will discuss the question of how does where and when we live influence how we live by examining three unit themes: Multi-cultural populations, Similarities and differences among groups of people, and Equal Rights for all. The unit on multicultural populations will explore the changing face of our society as we continue to see a growing trend in immigration. Students will focus specifically on the influx of the Hispanic culture to our state and nation-wide. This unit directly relates to the fourth grade service learning project that takes place at Plaza Road Preschool, which services a predominately Hispanic population. The unit on multi-cultural populations transitions into a unit on similarities and differences among groups of people. Fourth grade students will examine stereotypes and prejudices that can occur and will focus on their role both historically and currently. Finally, fourth graders will use skills taught in previous units to fully appreciate a unit on equal rights. Students will examine equal rights for all groups of people and will openly discuss the importance of equality and fairness for all people.
The Life Skills units will be presented through the use of thematic literature, journaling, and self-reflective writing. Role playing, skits, and open dialogues will also be a part of the Life Skills curriculum.
Students will be asked to consider the following questions:
1. How does where and when we live influence how we live?
2. What can we learn about similarities and differences in others?
3. How does one learn to live among those that are different?
4. How can we learn that different people have special and unique gifts?
