Fifth Grade Service Learning

Instructor: Jerod Jones

The 5th grade focus for service learning is the environment. The 5th grade seeks to prevent pollution and preserve habitat for wildlife. The students' biggest job is to manage and collect the school recycling every week. In addition, the students mark storm drains in the Davidson and Cornelius area to prevent water pollution and feed the resident birds on Woodlawn’s campus each winter as a way of supporting wildlife in our high-development area. The 5th grade picks up trash on Woodlawn's adopted island in Lake Norman, improving the island habitat for wildlife and preventing injury to wildlife from the trash. The 5th grade learns about water quality through a visit to the local water treatment plant. The culminating project for this grade involves each student choosing a polution problem, learning about the problem and possible solutions and learning how to be a good citizen by speaking out about the issue. By taking action on our campus and in the community to help the environment, we live out our creed and we preserve for generations to come all of our rich natural heritage.
