This year in Spanish students discover how today’s Hispanic populations descend from a variety of indigenous cultures. Studying the pre-Colombian cultures throughout Latin America is an integrated unit with Science and Math. This unit is followed up by studying the Kuna and Aymara indian populations of Panama and Bolivia. Students create their own mola and compare their home with that of the Ayamara's uta.
During Hispanic Heritage Month students look at the contributions Hispanic Americans bring to this country. Finally, students will complete two projects: one focusing on the heritage behind Latin American flags and the other on famous sites throughout Latin America. The latter coincides with a unit from Social Studies.
In grammar, students will be able to converse about day-to-day things such as time, day, date, weather, and carry on with basic conversational greetings.
Required Materials: All students should have their own paperback Spanish-English dictionary. Preferred versions are Merriam-Webster, New World, or Oxford.
Questions to consider:
By the end of 5th grade Spanish, students must be able to create complete sentences and carry on a basic introductory conversation.
