In mathematics, students examine how our basic number system and measurement units have helped to define our society. They see the impact of systems of measurement on a society by studying the Metric System and the French Revolution.

Students learn about the economic structure of societies and the role that individuals play in this system. They apply their computational skills to analyze the stock market, credit cards, and loans. Students also learn how businesses impact societies, and they apply this knowledge by creating their own small businesses. Students learn how technology impacts the financial systems in our own country.

In a project on animal extinction and overpopulation, students look at how statistical information helps societies make decisions on the use of resources and the creation of new legislation. Students examine how the human society impacts the societies of animals. Through service learning projects and by planning suitable habitats, they learn steps that can be taken to minimize negative impacts by humans.

Students will be asked to consider the following questions:

  • How does mathematical understanding help a society be fiscally responsible? How do number systems and units of measurement help to define a society?
  • How can data and statistics help to define the direction of a society? How do businesses contribute to the formation of a society?
  • What effects do human societies have on animal societies? What things can be done to minimize the impact?
