In 6th grade science students sample the study of ecology by examining important biotic and abiotic elements of the natural world. With an ecology field survey we gain an appreciation of the complexity of ecosystems. We then study the animal kingdom in depth. We focus on the form and function of the eight major phyla of animals, cataloging the many ways which animals have found to survive on earth. We learn how scientists classify animals and we become familiar with animal behavior patterns. In a physical science unit we learn about phase changes and properties of liquids and gases as they relate to world weather patterns. Finally, we learn the components of our world’s atmosphere and examine air pollution as a physical science phenomenon and as a local, societal, and global problem.

Important Questions:

  • How does studying animal structure, function and classification help us understand the complexity of life on earth?
  • What strategies do animals use to fit into the physical world and their own society?
  • Why is air pollution a global problem? What can we do as individuals and as a society to reduce air pollution?
