Monday

In class: Discuss Greek presentations of the 9th grade. Work on coat of arms project.  Complete learning about social class in the feudal system.

Tuesday

In class: Work on coat of arms project.  Learn about towns in the feudal system.

Wednesday

In class: Work on completing the coat of arms project.

Thursday

In class: Coat of Arms.  Prepare for portfolio viewing. Portfolio viewing at 3:00.  If you cannot attend, you are welcome to come after school to view your child’s work.  Your child can also bring the portfolio home to view.

Homework: Complete coat of arms project if not done in class.

Friday

In class: Geography lesson.  Learn more countries of Europe and their locations: England, France, Germany.

Monday

In class: Veteran’s Day program.

Tuesday

In class: Begin coat of arms project. What are the values that you live by?  What are your personal qualities?  Discuss symbols. Throughout history animals have been used to symbolize certain qualities such as loyalty, strength, courage, gentleness, wisdom, fortitude or endurance.

Homework: If your family has a coat of arms, could you bring it in to share this week?

In class: Continue coat of arms project.

Friday

In class: 9th Grade hosts a Greek Festival.

Homework: Complete work on Middle Ages from textbook.

In class: Finish test. Make a bulla, a good-luck charm bag from Roman times.

In class: Women leaders: Boudica.

 

Friday

In class: The Byzantine Empire: Theodora.

Monday

In class: Continue learning about Pompeii.  Discuss the field trip. Discuss Roman copying of Greek art.

 

Tuesday

In class: Discussion of expectations for student work.  Continue compiling cards with Roman Empire information on them.  Discuss Pompeii as a typical Roman town. Read about citizenship.

 

Wednesday

In class: Read about the five good emperors and complete the Roman timeline.

Homework: Complete cards if you have not done so in class.

 

Thursday

In class: Test postponed until Tuesday.  Film on Pompeii.

 

Friday

In class: Review for Roman test. Test Tuesday.

Homework: This test is open note.  You can prepare by using your timeline and your information cards.

In class: Continue project. Discuss Pompeii and the volcano eruption in 76 A.D.

 

Friday

In class: Field Trip to Discovery Place – Pompeii Exhibit and I-Max movie.  Departing from Woodlawn at 8:30 and returning at 1:20.  Please bring a bag lunch with drink.  We will be eating a picnic at Discovery Place.

Wednesday

In class: Begin project on Roman public architecture.

In class: What were the differences between the Athenian and the Spartan forms of government?  Learn about both forms of government to see. Learn more about Athens and Sparta. Review for quiz with review guide.

Homework: Study for quiz.

In class: Quiz on Ancient Greek Basic Facts with open note portion. 

Friday

In class: Prepare for the Athens/Sparta debate! Debate on Monday!

In class: Discuss what it means to be a part of society.  What does it mean to be a citizen of the United States?  What are our citizenship rights and responsibilities?

In class: A small history of Ancient Greece. What were the citizenship rights and responsibilities in Ancient Greece?

 

Thursday

In class: More history of Ancient Greece.  The Delian League.

In class: Woodlawn Day!

Monday

In class: Discuss Greek Festival field trip. Learn about Greek and Russian Orthodox icons. Make a Greek society concept map.

 

Tuesday

In class: Complete Europe overview.  Write in your journal answering the question "What is Europe?"

Homework: Complete writing assignment if not done in class.

 

Wednesday

In class: Travel back in time to Ancient Greece.  Introduction.

 

 

Thursday

In class: How we know about Ancient Greece: archeological evidence.  What are the limitations of this knowledge?

 

Friday

In class: Great buildings of Ancient Greece and what they were used for.  The story of the beginnings of democracy or rule by the people.

In class: Introduction to Europe.  What is Europe?  Where is Europe? European scavenger hunt. 

Wednesday

In class: Introduction to European geography.  Finish European Scavenger Hunt and discussion.

Homework: Finish class work if not done in class. 

Thursday

In class: Greece scavenger hunt and discussion. Modern Greece.  Greek culture.  The Greek Orthodox Church.  Greek food.

Friday

In class: Field trip to the Charlotte Greek Festival.  Departing 10:00, returning 1:30.  Students should bring money for lunch.  Other purchases are optional and include Greek pastries.  Driver/chaperones are Masur 5, Moran 5, Griffeth 4, Robinson 6, Wacker 4.
