In 6th Grade Social Studies we explore the geographies, governments, cultures, and histories of European nations. This class enables us to learn about different societies, see how they were formed, and begin to understand how they fit into the world around them. It also allows us to see how individuals fit within a society and the positive or negative impacts they have on others.
Geography influences societies. Aspects of a population’s identity are also influenced by history. We constantly look for connections between groups of people and the physical world surrounding them and the history that shaped them.
A major theme for 6th grade is the role of governments within societies. We examine the formation of governments in different nations and the impact that these systems have on each social class.
All societies have unique values and traits that make them different. By studying the cultures of European nations we distinguish one group from another and learn to appreciate the differences that we find. We study events and individuals that are a byproduct of the societies they are connected to. In 6th grade we form a picture of how geography, government, and culture come together to write the history of European nations.
