In science, students examine what it means to be human by looking at how chemistry affects their standard of living, how photosynthesis and cellular respiration establish our dependence on plants, and how our bodies are structured for their function.

 

While studying chemistry, we look at how the atomic theory developed and how we use chemical reactions to develop everything from cola to pottery. This unit transitions into a study of the two chemical processes, photosynthesis and respiration, that keep organisms alive. The study of photosyntheis incorporates the physics of light and color. Students begin their study of human biology with cellular structure, reproduction, and genetics. The year finishes with a study of human systems, emphasizing structure and function.

 

Students consider the following questions:

  • How does chemistry contribute to our standard of living?
  • How do photosynthesis and respiration define the elements that keep humans alive?
  • How does the human body function to keep us alive? How are humans unique in the animal world?
