This year in Spanish, students perfect their grammar skills through a survey in literature. Students read from a variety of sources such as: myths, fables, folk tales, short stories, poems, and news articles. Many of the reading selections are integrated topics with Social Studies where students read corresponding stories (in Spanish) from pre-Columbian and Egyptian civilizations.
Classics like El Cid, Lazarillo de Tormes and Don Quixote (excerpts) are also read as part of their study in Spanish literature. Students do a more intense study of Spain spanning from the Moors to the Franco years. Later in the year, a unit on Magic Realism covers the greatest authors and works from the 'Latin American Literature Boom'.
Throughout the year in grammar, students complete a review of seven different verb tenses, as well as learn the Subjunctive and Imperative. All of these tenses are analyzed throughout the reading materials. Students should be able to converse freely in these tenses.
