Level: Part I of Spanish I
Vocabulary Topics Covered:
School – classroom supplies, subjects
Day-to-day – Greetings, Days of Week, Months, Seasons
Numbers
City – places and modes of transportation
Foods – restaurant setting, most basic meats and beverages
Family – members of
Adjectives – basic descriptive adjectives, taught in opposites, i.e. tall / short; good / bad
Verbs – infinitive forms of basic –AR, -ER, -IR verbs
Grammar:
Article / Noun Agreement
Adjective / Noun Agreement
Subject Pronouns
Conjugation of regular –AR, -ER, -IR verbs
Irregular verb meanings & conjugations of: Ser, Estar, Ir, Tener
Overall Skills:
Sentence word order – Article + Noun + Adjective
- i.e. El carro rojo = The red car
Showing Possession with ‘de’ and not ‘s (as done in English)
Recognizing Cognates and Cognate patterns (-ción & -dad)
Telling Time
Able to recognize and label all Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America + Spain & Equatorial Guinea on a map.
By end of 6th grade year, students should be able to answer (in a complete sentence) the following:
¿Cómo te llamas?
¿Cómo estás?
¿De dónde eres?
¿Cuál es la fecha hoy?
¿Qué tiempo hace hoy?
¿Qué hora es?
*NOTE to New Students of Spanish: Trying to cover ALL of this is not absolutely necessary. Building a vocabulary foundation in a foreign language takes time, practice,
and most importantly –maintenance. The most essential skill from the 6th Grade level is learning how to conjugate a verb.
